Getting around Venice

What makes Venice very unique is the fact that cars are banned from the city centre. On what other citybreak destination can you find that? It´s simply impossible for cars to cross the city centre. Even motorcycles or mopeds are forbidden. Venice is built on 117 islands, which are connected to each other by many bridges. So there are not so many means of transportation on dry land. You will have to walk or other wiseuse one of the means of water transport.

Vaporetto Venice

The vaporetto water buses are the most common means of transportation in Venice. You can choose between inside and outside seats. It’s a nice way to explore Venice from the water. There are various routes through the city. Route 1 leads through the Grand Canal and has a lot of stops. Route 2 also runs through the Grand Canal, but has fewer stops. Would you like to visit the cemetery Island San Michele or the Island Murano, famous for its glassmaking, than you can take the waterbuses 41 and 42. Also at night there is a water bus, indicated with the letter N. The water buses are a nice and efficient way of transportation. You can buy tickets at kiosks, tobacco stores or at the desks near the bus stops. If you want to use the water buses a lot during your citybreak Venice, you can buy tickets that are valid for one or more days.

Gondolas Venice

The gondolas are very nice and romantic, but maybe not the best means of transportation because of the high costs. If you are willing to pay a lot, it can be a great experience as a tourist attraction.

On foot in Venice

The best way to discover Venice is on foot. The city is very well accessible on foot. But don´t forget to buy a city map. It’s easy to get lost in the labyrinth of small streets.

Getting from the airport to the city centre Venice

Are you planning to travel to Venice by plane, then you will probably arrive at the Marco Polo Airport. The airport is located 12 kilometers north of Venice. Outside the arrival terminal you can take a bus to Venice. The buses will not bring you into the city centre, because buses are forbidden in the heart of Venice. You will arrive at the most important entry point of Venice; the Piazzale Roma. From here you can take a water bus or water taxi into the city. The buses are the cheapest way to travel from the airport to the centre of Venice. But you can also choose a water bus, which is also not so expensive. Do you choose to travel by private water taxi, then you will have to pay much more. It is also possible to book a flight to the Treviso Airport; a smaller airport situated 40 kilometers north of Venice. From this airport the best way to travel to Venice is also by bus and you will also arrive at the Piazzale Roma.
